Collage: games of oppositions

  • March 5, 2026

Collage, as an artistic technique, embodies a unique duality that resides at the intersection of chaos and order, tradition and innovation. This medium allows artists to explore the profound nature of images as living entities, echoing André Breton’s notion that they “exist in a wild state.” These images transcend the boundaries of our rational understanding, possessing an autonomy that invites creativity and imagination. Through the art of collage, artists harness this wildness, capturing and reshaping images that resonate with viewers on multiple levels.

At its core, collage is an assembly of various elements, ranging from snippets of photographs, clippings from magazines, fragments of text, to abstract patterns and colors. The process of assembling these disparate components creates a rich tapestry where forms, textures, and narratives intertwine. The beauty of collage lies in its ability to create a dialogue—a conversation among the pieces, where oppositional forces complement each other and unexpected connections emerge. This interplay of images fosters an atmosphere that can evoke sensations, perceptions, and emotions that go beyond mere representation.

The act of collage invites the artist to explore a fertile disorder of associations, where hierarchy is absent, and diverse references can coexist. In a single artwork, one might find museum masterpieces juxtaposed against urban signage, folklore artifacts intertwined with contemporary fashion, or biological figures meeting exotic architecture. These eclectic combinations serve to challenge conventional narratives and encourage viewers to engage with the work more deeply.

Each piece in a collage carries its own story, yet together they create a new narrative, rich in complexity and depth.
