Sylvia Thijssen
Statement
As an artist I have a particular affinity for trees and branches. I relate that to my first name. ‘Silva’ is the Latin word for forest, and with the ending -ia, I feel like a resident of the woods. So beside making installations and objects with branches, I paint trees.
On this site, I present several paintings from the Italian Trees series, which run like a thread through my work. They evoke a sense of peace and space that fragments into color.
It’s a personally felt moment of peace and gazing into a reckless space, but at the same time, it’s also a universal emotion where eternity is experienced in the present moment. People often seek these peaceful moments because they offer a counterbalance to the harsh and cruel chaos that also exists in our world.
My paintings of Italian Trees are an invitation to linger in this moment of tranquility within ourselves.
