Hi Xena, what is your main source of inspiration when creating these abstract landscapes?
My main source of inspiration is nature. Growing up in Spain, I had access to a variety of landscapes, from beaches to mountains, each with its unique beauty. I love observing how the light changes throughout the day, creating different shadows and colors. I try to capture this beauty in my work, but I don’t want to limit myself to a literal representation. My intention is to convey the emotion and atmosphere of a place rather than just its form. I also draw inspiration from personal experiences and the emotions tied to the locations I’ve visited.
How would you describe your creative process?
My creative process is highly intuitive and often begins with a phase of exploration. I make many sketches and write notes about my feelings and impressions regarding certain landscapes. Once I have an idea, I start experimenting with different materials to see how they blend together. I use various mediums, ink, watercolor, and acrylic and I enjoy mixing them in a way that allows them to interact. I don’t follow a rigid plan; instead, I let the work develop organically. The interaction with the materials often leads to discoveries I couldn’t have anticipated.
Can you explain how you use mixed techniques in your work?
Using mixed techniques is fundamental to my work because it allows me to express the various facets of my artistic vision. For example, I use ink to define outlines and shapes, which provide a basic structure to the composition. Watercolors, on the other hand, offer a quality of transparency and lightness, creating backgrounds that seem to float. Finally, acrylic is applied with vibrant strokes, adding depth and intensity to the colors. This combination of elements allows for works that are both layered and dynamic, capturing the viewer’s attention and inviting them to discover new parts of the canvas.
Is there a particular message you wish to convey through your works?
Through my works, I want to convey a strong sense of connection to nature and the need to preserve it. In such a hectic world infused with technology, I feel that many distance themselves from what is truly important. My paintings aim to evoke deep reflection on human impact on the earth; I hope people feel inspired to reconnect with nature. I wanted my paintings to be not just decorations, but to stimulate an emotional dialogue, invoking a recognition of the beauty and fragility of our environment.

Which artwork are you most attached to and why?
The artwork I am particularly attached to is the one I completed in 2024. It represents a refuge of beauty and calm that I designed during a period of personal change. During that time, I was exploring and introspecting, and the piece reflects many of the emotions I experienced: fragility, but also a deep sense of hope. Every brushstroke tells my story and my feelings, making it a part of me. I believe that the most significant artworks are those born from intense personal experiences; therefore, this one holds a special place in my heart.
How do you think your art will evolve in the future?
In the immediate future, I see myself exploring new techniques and materials. I am very interested in using texture and unconventional supports to expand my visual language. I believe that the evolution of art occurs through the ongoing challenge of oneself. I might also want to participate in collaborative projects, which could lead to exciting new directions in my work.
Who are some artists or movements that have influenced your work?
I draw inspiration from several artists, including Joan Miró and Gerhard Richter, whose innovative approaches to color and abstraction inspire me. The movements of abstract expressionism and surrealism have also had a significant impact on my artistic vision. I admire how these artists challenged traditional forms and expressed deep emotions through their work. Their willingness to experiment with materials and concepts encourages me to push boundaries and explore new avenues in my own creations.
What advice would you give to someone looking to pursue a career in abstract art?
My advice would be to remain authentic and listen to your inner voice. It’s vital to experiment without fear and to keep exploring new ways to express yourself, even in the face of doubt or criticism. Embrace the unpredictability of the creative process, and remember that every artist has a unique path. Surround yourself with supportive peers and mentors who inspire you, and never shy away from taking risks in your art. Ultimately, perseverance and passion will guide you on your journey.
