Matthew G Beall
Statement
I’m Matthew G. Beall, an American abstract painter working between Europe and the United States. I build my work through painting, drawing, and collage. Paper matters to me because it keeps the work close to the hand and close to the person looking at it. In smaller pieces, that closeness becomes part of the experience. You don’t stand back from them. You come near. I often work with a limited palette, with black giving the piece weight and structure. That restraint creates pressure, tension, and intimacy. It makes each mark matter more. My work is an optical experience. The eye moves through it, pauses, shifts, and finds its own way. I don’t make abstraction to explain one fixed meaning. I make it to leave space for memory, instinct, and the response each person brings to the work.
